I carried out my thesis work on the design of a double cableway system aimed at modernization including integrated rescue. Abstract: The ropeway transport sector has long been governed by established regulations and supported by a specialized body of literature developed over the past century by a few distinguished experts. However, the recent expansion of ropeway systems beyond mountainous areas into urban environments has highlighted the need to update these regulations to address diverse design conditions and objectives. Technological innovation has also introduced modern solutions that, while adhering to core design principles, offer opportunities for regulatory evolution and sectoral growth. Calculation methods have significantly evolved: the traditional study of ropes based on catenary and parabolic models has shifted from manual calculations to advanced software tools. Among these, the S.I.F. (Software Impianti a Fune) enables analytical catenary calculations, enhancing design reliability by treating line supports as anchoring points and computing each span using classical formulas. More recently, finite element modeling software has pushed the technological frontier further, allowing precise simulations of rope behavior at every point in the system, including support rollers and under various load and weather conditions. This master’s thesis proposes the design of a ropeway system using the S.I.F. software to modernize an existing bicable aerial tramway. The project introduces innovative, regulation-compliant solutions aimed at transforming the current installation into an “integrated rescue” system. This concept, still scarcely regulated in Italy but already present in EU standards, allows for passenger recovery in the event of a malfunction without resorting to traditional rescue operations—thus establishing a new approach to reliability and safety in the ropeway sector.
