About
Our climate is deeply connected to how ecosystems function: ecosystems regulate the exchange of energy and matter between land and atmosphere, creating powerful feedbacks that shape local and global climate. My research focuses on how climate change — and especially extreme events — alters these feedbacks between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. Together with my team, I investigate this using a range of approaches: from direct field measurements (e.g. eddy covariance towers) to remote sensing and ecosystem modelling. We work across diverse systems — forests, peatlands, and even urban environments — to quantify, understand, and simulate how ecosystems respond to change, and how these responses in turn influence climate.

Associate Professor
Germany
- Lead research on ecosystem-atmosphere interactions. - Established a 30 m high measurement system in a forest for long-term flux monitoring. - Established an ICOS-class peatland greenhouse gas observation station. - Established an urban greenhouse gas monitoring system in the city of Münster. - Developed new teaching modules in BSc and MSc study programs Landscape Ecology, Geography, Teaching of Geography, and Geoinformatics

Senior Scientist
Switzerland
- Lead site operations and research at a top-tier ICOS Class 1 ecosystem station. - Managed high-precision carbon and greenhouse gas flux measurements to monitor ecosystem carbon dynamics. - Designed and implemented a network of tree-level growth and sapflow measurement systems. - Oversaw stable isotope sampling for advanced ecohydrological assessments and analyses.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow
- Optimizing prescribed burning to enhance carbon sequestration and water management outcomes. - Collaborated closely with stakeholders, including catchment authorities, fire management agencies, and the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC. - Delivered science-based ecosystem management tools to support informed decision-making by practitioners. - Digitalized teaching of Fire Ecology (Innovation in Teaching grantee) - Coordinated and completed measurement campaigns across over 60 forest sites in southeast Australia
