Michael de Groot
Qualified Pickleball Coach @ Staying Alive Pickleball
About
I work across both strategic development and grassroots delivery to grow Pickleball in England — building participation, developing players, and helping shape the systems, partnerships, and infrastructure that support long-term growth of the sport. As West Midlands Regional Director for Pickleball England, I focus on expanding structured participation across the region while supporting fair, consistent and sustainable competition and development pathways. This includes working closely with County Representatives, clubs, and key stakeholders across the West Midlands, with a particular focus on Birmingham and surrounding areas.A key part of my role is acting as a Pickleball development enabler across education and community sport. I work in partnership with schools, academies, trusts, colleges, and universities, as well as regional councils and Active Partnerships, to support the delivery of physical activity outcomes for young people — including helping align with national objectives to increase daily activity levels through accessible sport. Pickleball provides a simple, inclusive entry point that supports engagement across all ages and abilities.Alongside this, I am Founder of Staying Alive Pickleball, where I design and deliver structured coaching, playing environments, and development programmes. This includes beginner introduction sessions, group coaching clinics, one-to-one coaching, intermediate and advanced matchplay, tournament preparation, boot camps, DUPR-focused sessions, and team and corporate events.I also tutor on the Pickleball Leaders Certification programme — the entry point on the national coaching pathway — supporting the development of new coaches and leaders to help increase capacity and consistency in delivery across the sport. In addition, I work with private investors and partners exploring opportunities to develop dedicated Pickleball facilities across the region, supporting the infrastructure required to meet growing demand and enable sustainable expansion of the sport. My focus is practical and outcome-driven: building environments that work on court, scale in the real world, and create lasting participation, capability, and opportunity across the sport.Let’s collaborate! West Midlands Regional Director
West Midlands, England, United Kingdom
My volunteer role as West Midlands Regional Director I'm honoured to be your voice and advocate as the West Midlands Regional Director for Pickleball England. In this role, I wear several hats, all focused on growing and nurturing our vibrant pickleball community. Firstly, I represent the game itself. That means being a resource, answering questions, and educating people about the joys and benefits of pickleball. From newcomers curious about the rules to seasoned players seeking guidance, I strive to be a point of contact and support. Secondly, I serve as an ambassador – a bridge between Pickleball England and our regional members. I listen to your concerns, ideas, and suggestions, ensuring these reach the wider board and influence crucial decisions about the game's future. Thirdly, I'm your advocate. Whether it's advocating for more courts, better resources, or simply a listening ear, I'm dedicated to representing your needs and ensuring the West Midlands region thrives within the national pickleball landscape. But my role doesn't end there. I'm also an information hub, actively disseminating updates about programs, plans, and the overall direction of Pickleball England. By staying informed myself, I can effectively communicate and keep our regional community engaged. This responsibility excites me. I cherish the opportunity to connect with players of all levels, contribute to the sport's growth, and witness the West Midlands pickleball scene flourish. So, whether you're a seasoned pro or just picking up a paddle, know that I'm here to serve and support you. Let's keep the passion for pickleball alive and make our region a vibrant hub for this amazing game!
