Lydia Charles Moyo

Lydia Charles is a visionary young woman feminist and a powerful advocate for young women and girls rights. She is driven by a deep commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty through economic empowerment and technology. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Her Initiative (www.herinitiative.or.tz), a Tanzanian non-governmental organization that works with and for young women and girls to break the cycle of poverty and achieve financial resilience in Tanzania. She is also the innovator behind Panda Digital (www.pandadigital.co.tz), the first Swahili hybrid e-learning platform for women in Tanzania, which provides access to skills, resources, and social justice through a website platform and AI SMS technology. Her vision? A world where a girl's potential is limitless and untethered to perceived constraints.She believes that when girls are financially independent, they have a choice. Her motto is: “Girls should not be limited to dream, the bigger the dream the bigger the chance.” As the founder and executive director of Her Initiative and the creator of the innovative Panda Digital platform, she is building pathways to financial resilience for a generation of young women in Tanzania. Lydia's journey is rooted in her own experiences growing up in a community where many girls were denied the opportunity to complete their education due to extreme poverty and limited resources. This experience lit a fire inside, fueling her unwavering determination to dismantle the barriers that prevent girls from reaching their full potential.Her Initiative began as a grassroots effort: a secondary school self-esteem and rights awareness campaign. Under Lydia's leadership, it has evolved into a dynamic organization that champions financial independence among young women. Lydia's commitment to inclusivity is evident in her approach with the Panda Digital platform. She continues to ensure that the platform remains rural, urban accessible, and customized in Swahili. This dedication to serving the most vulnerable demonstrates her unwavering commitment to equity. Her exceptional leadership and impactful work have garnered well-deserved recognition. Lydia is a recipient of the prestigious 2024 Global Citizen Prize and the 2023 KBF Africa Prize, accolades that highlight her significant contributions. Lydia is also an activist who advocates for decolonization of funding for youth through social media and blogging.She mentors young women and girls who are running organizations and businesses and inspires them to pursue their dreams.
