R&D internship aimed at the development of big data-driven mobility demand models from mobile network and smartphone app location records. Tasks included: - Extensive literature research: present state of art of big data in people mobility analysis and the related gaps, mobile/smartphone location data acquisition and treatment; - Data provisioning for a pilot study: collection by some recruited volunteers, cleansing, geo-temporal processing and feature engineering to get a useful data format; - Unsupervised learning: different clustering algorithms and feature sets comparison, interpretation of results, trip purposes estimation, identification of criticalities and scalability to a larger dataset. This internship work was also the topic master's degree thesis.

My tasks included: - Model implementation in PTV Visum: supply model (study area zoning, road and public transport network definition), four-step demand model and assignment models; - Support for model calibration: automated numeric and visual reports, flexible tool to easily update cost functions parameters, OD matrix correction with traffic counts; - Scenarios management and simulation: implementation and management of supply/demand modifications, automated export of plots and KPIs.
