About

The aggregate value of the biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies I have co-founded, financed, and led is over $15 billion. I am an entrepreneurial Cell & Developmental Biologist (Yale, Rockefeller University). I understand how to translate important discoveries into useful impact. I am experienced in the evaluation, screening, and structuring of private equity investment opportunities in biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. I am skilled at assessing the commercial potential of early-stage discoveries in diverse areas, and build value through authoring patents, figuring out the critical commercialization pathway, driving non-clinical development to initiate and conduct clinical trials, and forging corporate deals with strategic partners. My portfolio companies include Medivation (Ticker: MDVN), Dara BioSciences (Ticker: DARA) and Clearpoint Neuro (Ticker: CLPT) https://www.clearpointneuro.com/. For CLPT, I innovated and introduced the concept of using inter-operative MRI imaging for implanting electrodes for DBS (deep brain stimulation). The product candidates my portfolio companies are developing have the potential to help millions of patients worldwide who suffer from diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, and neuropathic pain. I co-direct a small fund to support bold, high risk research projects in collaboration with Harvard Medical School and Rockefeller University. We plan to leverage this fund to $30+ million. Currently, we are interested in CNS diseases and disorders like Alzheimer's, migraine, neuropathic pain, and stroke. I am an advisor to a fMRI brain imaging initiative (in pain and neuroscience) at Children's Hospital, Boston - and support this program. I serve on the Rockefeller University Council, and the McLean Hospital National Council, (McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate). I also serve on the Visiting Committee of Museum of Fine Arts (MFA), Boston and on the MBL Council, Woods Hole, MA. I also lead various philanthropic activities and try to leverage committed capital through 'venture philanthropy'. Recently, I teamed up with a private foundation called the Mayday Fund to endow a Professorship in pain neuroscience and brain imaging at Children's Hospital, Boston.

Throughout Rockefeller’s history, 24 of its scientists have won Nobel Prizes, 21 have won Lasker Awards and 20 have garnered the National Medal of Science, the highest science award given by the United States. The Rockefeller University Hospital was founded in 1910 as the first hospital devoted exclusively to clinical research. In the 1950s, the institute expanded its mission to include graduate education and began training new generations of scientists to become research leaders around the world. In 1965, it was renamed The Rockefeller University. Since its founding, The Rockefeller University has embraced an open structure to encourage collaboration between disciplines and empower faculty members to take on high-risk, high-reward projects. No formal departments exist, bureaucracy is kept to a minimum and scientists are given resources, support and unparalleled freedom to follow the science wherever it leads.
