How do Media Representations Affect the Mental Well-being of Autistic Families in China ● Analyzed the correlation between media representation and mental well-being of autistic families in China through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis(IPA) ● Conducted interviews with 10 different autistic families and found three results: (1) The media primarily focuses on the high functioning/low-functioning autistic children, exerting pressure on parents whose children are different from what the media portrays; (2) The emergence of streaming media lead to a lot of inaccurate information about autism believed by autistic families, causing more misunderstandings and confusion; (3) Chinese media has become more concerned about the autistic community in recent years, the media now has a more positive influence on autistic families.
