For IBM GSA's customer, Telstra, I performed operating systems upgrades on Sun servers from Ultra-5 up to E6500. My responsibilities included gap analysis, meeting with system owners and subject-matter experts to plan upgrades & address issues, the production of detailed technical plans for each server, peer-reviewing of plans, acting as technical lead for my plans, and assisting colleagues with their plans. I upgraded from various versions of Solaris to version 2.6 and also upgraded DiskSuite, Veritas Volume Manager, Oracle, Control-M, MQ Series, WebSphere and Orbix. During one upgrade, I diagnosed and fixed a server boot-problem, saving a 20-hour upgrade from being backed-out.

I had been working in this role for BHP IT, but in May 2000 they exited the project and I continued in my role as a contractor. In this role I supported 22 Sun and 8 Ultrix servers used for the development, testing, data migration, quality-assurance and training environments for a $100 million GIS cabling system project. I also was the administrator for the Rational Clearcase version-control system and assisted with software releases. Over a period of 3 months, I performed hardware upgrades (cpu/memory/disk) on Sun servers in Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Queensland.
