About
I am a thoughtful young South African, shaped by my experiences of growing up and living in the different locations: Pietermaritzburg, Makhanda, Somerset West, Johannesburg, and Cape Town. I would describe myself as a creative person on a journey of continued learning. My interest in writing and research, particularly that of a historical nature has been stimulated, nurtured and challenged through my undergraduate and postgraduate studies. During my BA(Hons) in Historical Studies, I was able to combine my interests in History and Chinese Studies through my dissertation research which analysed the generational presence, experiences and identity politics of immigrants from China and their descendants, with a geographical focus on Cape Town. At Cambridge, my research focused on the Cape Colony’s 1904 Chinese Exclusion Act and explored the importance of the Act in the establishment of a documentary state post the unification of South Africa. Now, at Yenching Academy at Peking University I plan to explore the trajectories, connections and exchanges between generational Chinese immigrants in South Africa and Mauritius.

The Parow Project produced three outputs (book, website and exhibition) on the history of the Jewish community in the Cape Town suburb of Parow in the 1900s. My role in the Project included conducting general archival research for the three outputs and leading the organisation of data for the "The Jews of Parow" website, housed on the University of Cape Town's site, Ibali and launched in September 2024.
