The Foundation of Medical Relief of Children (FIMRC) serves the needs of communities in undeveloped areas throughout the world, with an emphasis on care for children. In order to serve in the program, I flew into Kampala and drove into the Ugandan countryside to work at a FIMRC clinic located in Bumwalukani Village. At the clinic, I shadowed doctors, assisted in medical paperwork, organized and dispersed medicine, and assisted in administering testing for HIV. Through following my supervisor as he contacted local authorities and organizations to procure assistance and supplies, I gain insight into the difficulties of administering medical care in underdeveloped areas. Through my experiences in Uganda, I began to see the deeper underlying social and economic factors that prevented proper administration of medical care and aid in underdeveloped areas of the world. My experiences in Uganda led me to explore economics better understand these factors.

I worked under the supervision of Noel Irias at the nascent Carl J. Shapiro Simulation Skills Center in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) as part of a summer program run by the medical center. The program aimed to expose high school students to various fields of medicine through placement in various departments of the hospital. The Shapiro Simulation Skills center aimed to serve the BIDMC as a learning center for doctors to practice and hone surgical skills through simple instrument manipulation exercises to increase dexterity to equipment that simulated laparoscopic surgical operations. As part of the program, I created presentation for my supervisor explaining various medical procedures and conditions, attained hands on experience with suturing and other medical techniques, and assisted in testing and programming the surgical simulators.
