About
In a nutshell: I manage resources, deliver projects, solve problems, support clients, and train/mentor developers. I’ve steadily worked my way to Chief Technical Officer for a small company following a career started as a programmer designing, coding and debugging for software companies and nonprofits. I then worked my way up at my current (and repeat) employer with a few years in between at my own company. I have entrepreneurial traits and experience that benefit companies/clients because I understand the priorities and the behavior of an organization. I know the importance of Contribution Margins, cash flow, budgets, and ROI. I taught for six years at a local college, and learned a lot about how to teach and develop programmers both in the classroom and on the job. I’ve learned how to size up employees’ abilities and adjusting work to challenge developers & contractors enough to keep them engaged and learning but not over their heads, and motivate them to get the work done. I provide the technical leadership because I remain a hands-on mentor/manager. I still use my programming skills to identify and review technologies, recommend changes and how to communicate those needs to upper management. I inspire teams by bringing new ideas, methodologies, and best practices from all aspects of my career: manager, developer, business owner, and teacher. I am proud to say I develop creative solutions where others have failed. Many of these products then become tweaked and replicated for those, and additional clients. My peers have noted that I can look at things from 30,000 feet or get down into the detail. They say I know how to solve problems and finish projects. I like that, as making an impact is important to me, and it’s become my habit. I’ve been told I can engage with customers. Traits such as adaptability and compatibility, being responsible and confident serve both my companies and their clients.

From 1997 - 2002, I also worked for BAS as Senior Programmer/Analyst. I returned full-time after leaving in 2002 to run my own consulting company, though I continued to contract for BAS during those 3 years. I resumed those duties in addition to taking on accountability for anything & everything technical here, and managing all technical projects and staff (in house and contracted). What I do here: I’ve adapted Agile, Scrum, and MSF to work for us. It helped us as a small company tackle larger projects. Arriving back at BAS involved me taking ownership of the source code, and major revamping of projects to consolidate and streamline productivity and processes, while keeping my programmers engaged, challenged, and committed to the client mission. In this position I get to engage with both clients and developers, and that my skills in coaching, teaching, and mentoring my project team come together to serve our clients. I enjoy that. I design and develop solutions to provide clients with interfaces to connect "core" software - including client-specific business logic such as: --Payroll Imports, MRP/ERP, POS, Excel, legacy systems, Analysis and Productivity Reporting --Bank and Cash Management, Reconciliation, Check Fraud Protection imports/exports --Retirement and Benefit Administration Systems imports/exports --Various Overtime, Incentive, Bonus, and specialized Compensation Pay, Garnishment, Tax Calculations --History Data Archive - Keep old data online, but out of the way One of my proudest achievements is in developing these HR products that impact hundreds of thousands of people everyday – Payroll is mission critical. You have to get it right. It has to be on time. I’ve learned to both handle the stress and take pride in delivering needed results. I manage productive, creative teams that develop custom systems that save or generate hundreds of thousands of dollars and up for our clients, repeatedly. We know what works, and, how to build it.

I provided contracted programming / analysis for custom software needs, specializing in business data applications. It was object oriented development handling the full software life cycle: analyze, design, code, debug, implement, train, support, and maintain. Develop desktop, client/server, and web applications. -- I adopted individual or team approach for small or large projects as required. -- I customized expert training for clients in many programming languages and computer concepts.

I started teaching because I was not happy with the entry level programmers available. I decided to try to do something about it. The Credit Courses I taught were teaching recent high school graduates seeking Associate level degrees how to be programmers and older students looking for a career change: VB .NET Programming I, VB .NET Programming II, and Java Programming I. The Corporate Training courses were for students getting additional training in new tools. I taught them how to use the tools: VB 6, VB .NET, C#, and ASP .NET. I did not have any teaching experience before this. It was my technical experience that got me the job. I learned a lot that has been useful in my other professional positions, especially as an inspiring manager and technical leader. At the time, I was younger than many of the students I was teaching. Students could tell if you were unsure of something, so I learned to be prepared, and confident. Be able to explain something 3 different ways. It worked. I was able to create examples that I would walk the class through. This was a successful teaching method, demonstrating hands on examples, and showing different outcomes and scenarios.
