Kurt Kelty

VP of Battery and Sustainability at General Motors @ General Motors

About

I started working in batteries more than 30 years ago—the same year lithium-ion technology was introduced—and I’ve been at the forefront of battery innovation ever since. My career began at Panasonic, where I founded their Silicon Valley R&D lab to explore the future of battery technology. I then joined Tesla, helping to scale battery technology that shaped the EV industry, and later led commercialization efforts at Sila for next-generation silicon anode batteries. Now, at General Motors, I lead an amazing team focused on pushing the boundaries of battery innovation and propulsion technology to enhance EV performance, affordability, and sustainability. Our work spans the entire battery life cycle—from material research, raw material sourcing, advanced cell development to commercialization and end-of-life solutions that support a more sustainable ecosystem. I’m passionate about collaborating with world-class teams to turn cutting-edge research into real-world solutions that accelerate the future of electrification.
