Kurt Haapala, FAIA LEED AP

Kurt brings over 32 years of professional experience to the planning and design of student life, housing, and campus environments, including 27 years with Mahlum. A nationally recognized leader in higher education design, he has partnered with more than 25 colleges and universities across the western United States, helping institutions create environments that strengthen student success, foster belonging, and support the evolving needs of campus communities. Through this work, Kurt has helped shape Mahlum’s higher education housing studio into a nationally respected practice known for design excellence, research-driven thinking, and a deep commitment to the student experience. Kurt is widely respected for his thoughtful leadership, strategic vision, and ability to align institutional goals with innovative, human-centered design solutions. His passion for student and stakeholder engagement has fueled extensive research into the relationship between environment, community, and student outcomes, informing both his design approach and broader industry contributions. He is a frequent speaker and published author, with multiple articles and thought leadership pieces exploring the future of student life, equity in residential environments, and the role of design in supporting learning, wellness, and connection.
