I managed the exploration camps and development works for the early stages of this mine. Two exploration camps one at Kenyasi (Kenyasi #1 and Kenyasi #2) and the other at Yamfo were operated by different joint venture partners and resulted in inconsistencies like different crop compensation rates. I harmonized these rates and also addressed a restive group at Yamfo who managed to get media attention for some spurious demands. I used some unorthodox tactics which defeated these provocateurs and also garnered enthusiastic support from the regional minister.

I saved enough to buy some income properties: a four plex and two storage facilities. I survived the tech bubble and recent downturn without serious set backs but not without learning lessons too. When I am not working for clients I work around my 'farmette' which has an orchard and will have a small vineyard by the end of 2013.

I was the lead engineer for projects at the company, and as such I became involved with almost every decision the company took. Western States was an efficient mining firm. We justified and profitably operated mines with reserves as small as 12,000 ounces (Drum Mine). Western States operated Barrick's Goldstrike Mine and justified its involvement when the reserves were only 25,000 ounces. The home office in Minneapolis sold the mine against our advice but idd retain an earnings interest.

Design and built a camp for exploration and preconstruction of cobalt, manganese and nickel project. This project was equiped with modern amenities but was built using local labor. Local labor due to poor training or more likely no training often get left behind in a large project. Using local labor provides jobs and training as a first step in sustainable development.
