This thesis explored literature describing FCS-free media, with the aim to make recommendations for the development of new media.

* De Saffier is a special housing project with a social approach. In the former care wing of the Tolsteeg care home, more than 160 housing units for students and starters have been added. * As building manager, I’m responsible for the safety, hygiene, liveability and social * cohesion within a housing project in where young and elderly people live together * under one roof.

Electives Research project, 3-month internship: ‘Pheromone-mediated in vitro feeding of Ixodid ticks: a tool to evaluate the tick-host interface’ Utrecht Centre for Tick-borne Diseases- Department Infectious Diseases and Immunology - Veterinary Medicine - Utrecht University. During this internship, I aimed to improve a method to feed ticks artificially in the laboratory, without the use of experimental animals and to create a valuable tool to study important tick-borne pathogens.

Minor Research Project, 6-month internship: ‘Transmission and persistence of antimicrobial resistance in an artificial barnyard’ Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory - Department of Biomedical Science - Colorado State University. During this internship, I worked with multiple species of laboratory animals and various microbial techniques to evaluate the complexities of transmission and persistence of antimicrobial resistance in an artificial barnyard. During my stay, I followed a BSL-3 training course.

* Mayor Research Project, 9-month internship: ‘Brachyspira in dogs’, at the Medical Microbiology - UMC Utrecht & Department Infectious Diseases and Immunology - Utrecht University. * During this internship, I worked with molecular techniques to study the expected and postulating role of Brachyspira pilosicoli as a cause of diarrhea in dogs, and to determine the prevalence of Brachyspira species infecting dogs in the Netherlands. * Presented the results at The Scientific spring meeting 2016 as well as at a departmental staff meeting. * Two articles are expected to be published.

* As a program officer at ZonMw, I work for the programs More Knowledge with Fewer Animals and Rubicon. The range of tasks includes: * Supporting grant rounds: (co-) organizing and planning calls for proposals, monitoring progress * Organizing, preparing and documenting the content of consultations and meetings * Help monitor the start and progress of projects and contribute to the assessment of quality and results * Serving as a contact point for third parties and contributing to the building up of a relevant network

The mission of the 3Rs Center Utrecht Life Sciences (ULS) is to stimulate the development, application, and acceptance of methods that can Replacement, Reduction and Refinement (3Rs) of animal experiments. As part of the 3Rs database programme of the 3Rs Center Utrecht Life Sciences (ULS), I am updating the FCS-free Database (fcs-free.org). The FCS-free Database provides an overview of the range of commercially available FCS-free media and cell-culture medium compositions obtained from scientific literature. The aim of the FCS-free Database is to make information on FCS-free cell culture freely available to contribute to the implementation of the 3Rs in animal research
