About

Kevin Francis Sweeney is a fine art documentary photographer, graphic designer, photobook designer /editor and artist. He is the Founder and Design Principal of Rare Specimen Design. Kevin grew up in Houston, Texas and is a graduate of Tulane University. He completed his MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His work has been shown in the US and internationally including shows in New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, Maine, Mexico, Spain and the Czech Republic. He has been published in Leonardo, Pittsburgh Magazine and online in burn Magazine.Kevin received a grant from Pittsburgh Filmmaker’s in 2005 for his ongoing photography work in Cuba and in 2014 he participated in the Cuban Footsteps Project, that brought together Cuban and American photographers to reinterpret Walker Evan’s Cuba work from 1933. He is currently working on long-term street photography projects in New Orleans.Kevin has exhibited his work several times at the Silver Eye Center of Photography in Pittsburgh, primarily for his documentary project Sixteen Sundays: Worshipping the Pittsburgh Steelers. He received a commendation in Fellowship 14 and has lead photo workshops for The Silver Eye Center of Photography.In addition to his personal work, Kevin is a photobook designer and editor and has collaborated with established photographers both in the US and internationally in the design, editing and publishing of fine art photography books. Kevin has expertise and extensive experience in graphic design, branding, and interactive design.Kevin is based out of Austin, Texas and New Orleans, Louisiana.

Rare Specimen Design is a boutique graphic design studio specializing in photobook design and production. Our mission is to create rare specimens of design, objects worth keeping that transport stories across time and place. Working directly with photographers and independent publishers, the studio manages the full arc of a book project: image sequencing consultation, interior design and typography, cover design, prepress file preparation, and print management. Six photobooks have been designed and produced in collaboration with BazanPhotos Publishing, with photographers including Ernesto Bazan, Barbara Peacock, Willard Pate, and Giorgio Negro. The studio also provides a broad range of graphic design services for small businesses and nonprofits, including brand identity, logo design, web design, e-commerce, and print materials.
