About
Gender equality is better for everyone - even men and boys! I am a social scientist with a PhD in Human Rights and Social Development and 20+ years of experience in doing work in gender equity, healthy masculinity and social norms. Through writing, research, training and facilitation I help individuals and organizations identify harmful social norms that negatively influence their choices and decisions - and then work with people to take action to change harmful norms and improve their lives. My debut book "Equal Partners: Improving Gender Equality at Home" focuses on the benefits for men who live in a gender equitable way. I have also published in Time, Harvard Business Review, Good Housekeeping and Slate; Equal Partners has been featured in The Atlantic, CNN, BBC World News, NPR, We Can Do Hard Things and The Guardian. Have a look at some of my services! https://katemangino.com/consulting If you’re interested in a conversation, feel free to DM me for a free 30-minute consultation. I would love to learn more about your work and brainstorm how I might be able to help. And I'll also be honest if I don't think I am a good fit!

I started my own consulting business in 2017. (I just changed the dates so it showed up in the top of my experience feed!) I do a wide range of consulting, speaking and writing on social norms, gender equity, better boyhood, healthy masculinity.

Senior Technical Consultant
Washington DC-Baltimore Area
I joined Counterpart International during the pandemic lockdowns, helping transition their global training program from in-person to virtual. Since then, I’ve continued supporting them as we’ve shifted to a hybrid model. My role involves curriculum design and leading participatory training for incredible women leaders around the world. It is a true privilege to do this work with the Counterpart team.

Senior Technical Consultant
Again, the Foreign Aid freeze brought an end to my work with ECODIT. But I was really proud of what this small but mighty team of women was accomplishing! In the 8 months I was with ECODIT I worked on intersectional gender analyses in Ghana, Liberia, Haiti and Rwanda. This were thorough and rigorous assessments done with local experts to determine the underlying gaps women and girls faced, and opportunities for change. We focused on gender-based violence as well as the underlying social norms work that causes inequity. I would be excited to bring this wealth of knowledge to another project.

Senior Consultant
I spent two great years at Knowledge Partners before the Foreign Aid freeze brought an end to my contracts. During my time there, I worked on the DEVELOP and DECODE mechanisms, collaborating with creative teams on Human-Centered Design for knowledge management and strategic communications. One of my favorite parts of the job was ghostwriting for the company’s Medium pages.

Senior Technical Consultant
Remote
I spent 8 years at Encompass, working on five USAID contracts (ADVANTAGE, RDAP, GROWTH, GROWTH2, and DEVELOP) until my contract ended in January 2025 due to the Foreign Aid freeze. During my time there, I focused on curriculum design and delivery, writing, and qualitative research—mostly around gender equity and healthy masculinities. It was a rewarding experience, and I’m proud of the work we did!

Conference Speaker
Columbus, Ohio
This speaking engagement at THE Ohio State University made my buckeye heart very happy. I was honored to speak in-person at a Big 10 Women in Medicine and Science conference. I talked about gender norms, and had great audience participation about how gender norms affect their lives at home and at work.

Senior Technical Consultant
This was an exciting challenge! I worked with EduFinance to mainstream some of their gender objectives into their strategic plan. And as expected, the work took some twists and turns along the way. (Gender equity work is never straight forward! It requires patience, reflection, and a lot of listening.) In the end we came up with some solid results and a clear monitoring plan.
