Kang-Yell Choi
Chief Executive Officer @ CK Regeon
About
Dr. Kang-Yell Choi is a professor of Biotechnology in Yonsei University and have a joint appointment position as a CEO of CK Regeon Inc., Seoul, Korea. Dr. Choi was awarded his Ph.D. at Purdue University in 1993 and finished a postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. As initiated his research as an assistant professor in 1995, he has been performed research related with cellular signaling especially for the Wnt/β -catenin pathway involving various pathophysiologies. For last 10 years, he led the Translational Research Center for Protein Function Control (TRCP/ERC), a Korean government supported drug development institute, as a director. Dr. Choi has been carrying out R&D to develop agents controlling cancer as well as hair-loss, wound healing, and anti-aging etc. Currently, he is interested in the development of safe agents inducing regeneration of tissues via activation of the Wnt/-catenin signaling, not by direct activation but by release negative feedback mechanism. He found that CXXC5, a negative feedback regulator of Wnt/b-catenin pathway which function via interaction with Disheveled (Dvl) at cytosol, is overexpressed in tissues of the bald scalp and aged skins. Dr. Choi demonstrated the” CXXC5-Dvl protein-protein interaction (PPI)” as a target for development of agents enhancing wound healing and hair neogenesis by developing a PTD-DBM, a peptide recovers the suppressed Wnt/b-catenin signaling via blockade of the CXXC5-Dvl PPI. By topical application, the PTD-DBM peptide, especially when co-treated with a Wnt/β -catenin signaling activator such as valproic acid, induced neogenic hair growth and enhanced wound healing process. The PTD-DBM peptide is also revealed effective anti-aging effect of skin as shown by critical increment of collagen production with cell migration as well as its effects on suppression of ROS generation and apoptosis of skin cells in the tissues induced aging. The PTD-DBM peptide popularly has been used as agents for treatment of hair loss in North America. Based on the drug development experience and research outcomes, Dr. Choi established CK Regeon in 2016 and has been executing R&D in developing First-in-Class multi-pipeline small molecule drugs for obesity, diabetes, NASH, Alzheimer’s disease as well as hair-loss, wound healing, etc.
