To assist in the testing and evaluation of new methodologies and instrumentation and to contribute to the review process of SOP’s according to departmental policies. To assist in research activity, service development and clinical audit undertaken by the department. To authorise and act upon final technically derived diagnostic results for the immediate clinical management of patients as required . To use interpretative skills to determine the significance of laboratory results and take appropriate actions, including: authorisation of results, ordering of relevant follow-up procedures, adding technical and approved clinically relevant comments, referring results for clinical interpretation or opinion, and informing the requestor of clinically significant results. To take appropriate action when there is a situation that may or has caused a service delivery failure. To liaise with affected/involved clinical staff to ensure that priority work is identified and/or make alternative arrangements for analysis to be done as directed by the Head BMS. To attend departmental meetings, e.g. team brief, communication meetings, staff meetings as required by the Head BMS. To use specialist interpretative skills to perform biochemistry examinations. Such actions include: direct authorisation of results, suggestion of relevant follow-up procedures, adding technical and approved clinically relevant comments, referring results for clinical interpretation or opinion, and informing the requestor of clinically significant results. To perform more specialist tests and procedures as required (skills permitting) as directed by BMS2 or above as well as to communicates effectively with clinicians, nurses and other service users on issues technical nature, referring complex enquires to consultants. To work safely, with regard to the safety of patients, colleagues and others in conformance with current legislation.
