Julio Torales

My scientific activities focus on three lines of research: 1. Epidemiology and psychopathology of mental disorders (which aims to contribute to the knowledge of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and most prevalent clinical forms of mental disorders to guide the application of evidence-based therapies and the design of intervention plans); 2. Psychodermatology (a pioneering line in Paraguay, which promotes knowledge of mental disorders with cutaneous expression and dermatological disorders with psychopathological repercussions); and 3. Physiotherapy in Mental Health (which seeks to know, through evidence, those essential aspects of the role of Physiotherapy as an adjuvant treatment of the most frequent mental disorders, as well as its scope of application, and some specific intervention guidelines). The scientific production of my research lines is sustained: I have published 304 articles in scientific journals, highlighting articles indexed in major scientific databases (either PubMed, Scopus, or Web of Science). I have also published 23 books and 74 book chapters. I created and coordinated the Neuroscience Research Students Network of the FCM UNA as the main tutor. I have been tutor/co-tutor of 144 works, including master's theses, specialization theses, graduate theses and research initiation works. I have been and am reviewer of 135 scientific journals (128 international). I am also a Review Editor of Frontiers in Neuroscience and Frontiers in Psychiatry, and a Board Member of the Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine. I actively participate in research networks with colleagues from the University of São Paulo (Brazil), University of Foggia (Italy), University of Chile, Charité - Universitätsmedizin (Germany), and Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust (UK). I am also a member of the International COVID-19 Research Network (ICRN) and, at the national level, I coordinate the Scientific Research Group of the "Mental Health and Education" Team of the CONACYT Scientific Committee on COVID-19 Contingency. I have been awarded by the International Junior Chamber as "Outstanding Young Person of Paraguay" (in 2006); by the American Psychiatric Association (USA) as "International Fellow" (in 2013); by the World Psychiatric Association (Switzerland) as "Honorary Member" (in 2017); and by Elsevier/CONACYT with the SciVal CICCO Award (2022 & 2023).
