I'm responsible for developing and implementing policies and procedures related to planning & land use administration, and a comprehensive planning program for the District of Summerland. I manage a team of Planning, Building Official, and Administration staff to complete land development, building and permitting, as well as strategic planning projects. I am also the statutory Approving Officer.

The Planning & Land Use Management Branch works to promote effective land-use development and planning and support effective management of growth in the fastest growing regions in BC, with particular focus on the role of land use planning in advancing and supporting housing supply and affordability, and complete communities.

Hired to manage the Community Planning (long-range) team which includes the Business Licensing team.

I was hired to work in Community Planning as a Planning Project Manager to work on a variety of projects including development permit applications, land use amendments, outline plans, local area plans and other policy projects. Major projects include: • Chinatown Area Redevelopment Plan (Document Lead) • Calgary’s Greater Downtown Plan (Project Lead) • Downtown West Area Redevelopment Plan (Project Lead) • West Springs Area Structure Plan (ASP) Amendment & West Springs SE ASP Amendment (Document Lead) • Master Plan for West District (Outline Plans and Land Use Amendments) (File Manager) • Committees: South Saskatchewan Regional Plan, Consistency, MDP • Mentor staff on processes, methods and content.

I was hired to support a new location for the company in Calgary, but the economy forced this office to close. While I was there, my duties included: • Land Use Bylaw Review for Kneehill County. The project included project management, public consultation, background research, stakeholder meetings, a conversation cafe, and Bylaw preparation. • Area Structure Plan for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The project included a charrette, policy preparation and project management. • Proposal preparation. • Intermunicipal Plan between Rocky View County and the Town of Chestermere. I worked with the project manager to review and write policy.

My duties included: • Establishing and maintaining community and corporate climate action, which includes preparing the annual energy and emissions assessment, CARIP reporting, implementing the Climate Action Plan, leading the Climate Action Committee, representing the District on committees and for events, and making grant applications and funding recommendations. • Researching and preparing statutory planning documents for consideration by management and Council. Reviewing and making recommendations on plans, policies, or internal process. Writing Council reports and making presentations. Attending consultation sessions on behalf of the Planning Department. • Preparing an OCP amendment for a new Urban Growth Strategy. Completed projects include: • (2013) Completed a new Sign Bylaw for the District of Summerland. The project included public involvement, a technical review, and a new bylaw. This project is estimated to be adopted by Council early in 2014. • (2012) Conducted a planning study for the Bentley Road Industrial Park. The Planning Study included public consultation, background research, open houses, and presentations. The project included amendments to the OCP including a new development permit area as well as a new zone for the Zoning Bylaw. • (2011) OCP Amendment for the Regional Context Statement. • (2010-2011) Prepared Summerland's Climate Action Plan and first Corporate Energy and Emissions Assessment. • Until mid-2013, reviewed subdivision and development permit applications for compliance.

I worked as part of a team who provides planning studies, research, and public participation programs to support Planning and Development. My primary responsibilities were to manage projects relating to policy and regulation. • Project Manager for the Strathcona Junction Planning Study, leading to a new Area Redevelopment Plan (ARP), plan updates and rezonings (www.edmonton.ca/strathconajunction). Project steps included: background research, public consultation, presentations, workshops, open houses, print material creation and distribution, and a report to Council. Technical studies were underway. • Research paper called Designing an Ecological City for the New Suburban Design Guidelines project. • Participation in preliminary planning for a North & SE LRT Extensions. • Coordinated a public education program called Planning Academy.

Did electrical drafting for two years and then controls and HMI development after that. I developed standard Human Machine Interface (HMI) programs, taught training classes, answered service calls, scheduled jobs, tested computers, and wrote technical instruction manuals.

• Energy efficiency dissemination gap in the residential building sector in Toronto, Ontario - thesis project for the Toronto Energy Efficiency Office. • Evaluation techniques and emission reductions results from TDM initiatives in North American and European locations - report for the Clean Air Foundation. • Planning for the increase in wind energy in rural Ontario: Lessons from the UK – Dept. of Geography. • Researching fiscal tools for energy-efficient development in Toronto – Dept. of Geography. • Learning a technical approach to energy supply and use – Dept. of Geography. • The first urban wind turbine at Toronto’s Exhibition Place – Dept. of Geography.

Degree in Sociology with many courses in Urban Geography.
