Julia Huston

Julia consults with nonprofit organizations, both directly and through SOAR Management Consulting Group, a nonprofit providing pro bono management consulting services to small and midsize Greater Boston nonprofits and public agencies. Julia is particularly interested in board engagement, board development, and governance issues as well as legal and strategic planning.

Foley Hoag is a dynamic law firm that represents public and private clients in a wide range of disputes and transactions worldwide. Julia represented clients in trademark, copyright, false advertising, patent, and unfair competition matters in a diverse array of industries, including life sciences, healthcare, consumer products, technology, energy, education, food and beverages, and professional services. Over the course of her tenure, Julia served as Co-Chair of the Intellectual Property Department, Chair of the Trademark, Copyright and Unfair Competition Practice Group, and Co-Chair of the Advertising and Marketing Practice Group.

INTA is dedicated to the support and advancement of trademarks and related IP as elements of fair and effective commerce. Julia served as Chair of the INTA Parallel Imports Committee, which addresses the unauthorized importation of goods into geographic markets, a/k/a gray market goods. Julia previously chaired the North America Subcommittee of the Parallel Imports Committee, and served as a member of the Committee since 2010. She has served on other committees, led projects, and led subcommittees since 2002.

As a member and then chair of INTA’s Model State Trademark Bill Subcommittee, Julia spearheaded the first overhaul of the Massachusetts trademark laws in over 30 years.

The BBA is the oldest bar association in the United States. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of excellence for the legal profession, facilitate access to justice, and serve the community at large. Julia served as President from 2014 to 2015, and previously held a number of other positions, including Chair of the Amicus Committee, Co-Chair of the Litigation Section, and Co-Chair of the Delivery of Legal Services Section, since joining the BBA in 1992.

The mission of GBLS is to provide free legal assistance to as many low-income families as possible to help them secure the most basic necessities of life. Every day, GBLS attorneys and paralegals provide critical legal advice and representation to low-income individuals. In addition, thousands of other families and individuals benefit from the systemic advocacy GBLS carries out on behalf of its clients. Julia was on the Board of Directors from 2002 to 2012, and served as President from 2008 to 2011.

The Equal Justice Coalition (EJC) is a collaboration between the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation, the Massachusetts Bar Association, and the Boston Bar Association dedicated to ensuring that low-income people in Massachusetts have access to the courts when they have a civil (non-criminal) legal problem. From 2002 to 2008, Julia coordinated the participation of law firms at the EJC’s flagship “Walk to the Hill” event, in which Boston-area attorneys in private practice march to the State House and appear in person to lobby their elected representatives for adequate funding for civil legal aid. Julia also served as a member of the EJC’s Legislative Committee and Private Bar Advisory Committee, and subsequently chaired the EJC from 2008 to 2010.

Sunstein Kann Murphy & Timbers LLP (formerly Bromberg & Sunstein LLP) is an IP boutique providing services to technology and life sciences clients in the areas of litigation, patent prosecution, IP portfolio development and business transactions. During her tenure, Julia led the firm’s trademark and copyright practice groups.

Founded in 1845, New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) is the country’s leading resource for family history research.

The WBA is where women lawyers in Massachusetts come together to build important personal and professional relationships. The WBA is committed to achieving the full and equal participation of women in the legal profession and in a just society. Julia joined the WBA in 1992, and was on the Board of Directors for several years, and served as President from 2007 to 2008.

YWCA Boston is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. Julia served on the Board of Directors from 2006 to 2008 and chaired the Audit Committee from 2007 to 2008.

Julia served on Boston University Law Review and graduated with honors.

While working as a special education teacher, Julia pursued a master’s degree in educational policy. She became interested in the legal problems facing students and gained her first experience in public interest law through an internship at the Center for Law and Education.

Julia obtained an undergraduate degree in psychology as well as a degree in education, which allowed her to obtain certification to teach students with severe special needs.
