While working in the Particle Flow and Tribology Laboratory I assisted in the study of powder lubrication. I helped create a data acquisition system for a pellet-on-disk tribometer that was created for studying the effects of film thickness with a self-replenshing powder lubrication system.

The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) of the University of Rochester is a unique national resource for research and education in science and technology. The LLE conducts implosion experiments in support of the National Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) program. At the time, the LLE contained the most powerful and highest energy laser in the world. With 60 ultraviolet beams delivering 30 KJ, it had 60 TW of power. I was a laboratory technician there for the summer during my Junior year in High School. I designed and prototyped a two-state motor controller that could flip a lens assembly into and out of the path of the laser beam.

While working in the Space Propulsion Lab, I researched the feasibility of ion drag pump propulsion within space vehicle cabins. Specifically, I was working on retrofitting SPHERES, micro satellites that can maneuver around space cabins, with an electrical propulsion system. The original design was to use compressed gas for propulsion, but an ion drag pump would be more ideal with it being lighter, requiring less maintenance, and increase its reliability. Ion drag pumps only require electricity; providing thrust via the high velocity air molecules leaving the exhaust.

While pursuing my Ph.D. at Columbia University, I investigated the feasibility of meshless (or meshfree) methods as a replacement for the more commonly available meshed methods such as Finite Elements (FEM) or Finite Difference techniques in solving computational fluid and solid mechanics.
