Substance Abuse Counselor @ Valley Cities Behavioral Health Care

About

I work at the intersection of community, care, and systems. My background spans behavioral health counseling, community engagement, workforce and volunteer leadership, and non fiction writing all rooted in a deep belief that people do better when systems are humane, connected, and honest about what they ask of those inside them. Professionally, I’ve supported individuals navigating addiction, trauma, mental health, and recovery while also building programs that strengthen staff, volunteers, and community members doing emotionally demanding work. I’ve led volunteer programs, facilitated groups, trained and supported frontline workers, and contributed to organizational culture focused on equity, sustainability, and relationship-building rather than burnout and crisis response. Alongside this work, I’m a writer. I use narrative and reflective writing to explore care systems, survival, resilience, and the human cost of “just keep going.” Writing is not separate from my professional work, it informs how I listen, how I lead, and how I help organizations tell the truth about their impact on people. Across roles, my strengths include: • Building trust across diverse communities • Translating complex systems into human language • Supporting workforce and volunteer cultures grounded in dignity and accountability • Facilitating connection, reflection, and meaning in high-stress environments I’m especially drawn to roles and projects that sit between practice and policy, people and systems, and mission and sustainability, where thoughtful structure can create real relief and belonging. I believe community is built, not assumed and that care work deserves clarity, compassion, and integrity.

Through active community engagement, and effective communication strategies, I rebuilt the shelter care volunteer program post COVID through a massive reshuffling. I organized an expansion of the current volunteer programs to enhance the human animal bond with previously under-resourced groups. I streamlined the orientation process through development of a shelter wide volunteer training experience to create an efficient system and further engage the community volunteer. Worked with volunteers in marginalized groups, volunteers with disabilities, and volunteers with mental health illnesses. Advocating for members of the community to experience the human animal bond. This meant often dealing with difficult and irate individuals, and the utilization of de escalation tactics and skills. I also assist in developing vocational goals for individuals with disabilities and support their inclusion shelter wide. I use my creative and technical writing skills to create professional training to be used organization wide. I was a organizational leader, and managed both staff and volunteers successfully
