Halala Academy (‘halala’ means celebration or congratulations in the isiXhosa and isiZulu vernacular languages of South Africa) is a computer literacy programme located at Baleni Senior Secondary School in the Mbizana region of the Rural Eastern Cape. With the help of the Igqangi Project, an innovative initiative working to improve the educational outcomes of learners at rural Eastern Cape high schools, matric pass rates and university exemptions have increased dramatically at Baleni Senior Secondary School. However, many students leaving the high school have never seen a computer, let alone used one. Halala Academy aims to rectify this.
