Joseph Aaraj
Firefighter @ SDIS Malley
About
Mechanical engineer (MSc, control/automation/robotics) turned technical program lead — six years growing an industrial robotics startup from its first prototype to production systems now running at customer sites. I've worn a lot of hats at Isochronic AG: hands-on electrical and mechanical engineering, full-stack software development for robot HMIs, securing and managing a ~CHF 1M Innosuisse grant, and now leading the standardization of our engineering and procurement processes company-wide. All learned on the job — my process discipline comes from identifying what's slowing a team down and fixing it. That same instinct shows up outside work. As a volunteer firefighter (SDIS Malley) and referent for a new digital radio system, I trained ~80 firefighters — including officers and incident commanders — on operational use of the equipment.

Experience

Technical Program Manager
Lausanne Metropolitan Area
• Took full ownership of standardizing and industrializing engineering processes across all future electrical/control system projects • Designed a modular, flexible system architecture, reducing schematic development time from 2–3 weeks to under 1 hour per new machine • Own end-to-end procurement for system components: supplier evaluation, RFQs, purchase orders, delivery tracking, inventory management, BOM creation, and shipment logistics • Negotiate framework agreements with key suppliers and contractors • Coordinate contractor and technician planning for on-site installation across projects

R&D Engineer & Project Manager
Lausanne Metropolitan Area
Software & Digital Products (2023–2025) • Joined the software team and took ownership of designing and building the robot's full-stack HMI and web-based programming interface from scratch (React, Vite, TypeScript) • Continued managing the Innosuisse project, in parallel with software ownership and electrical development/installation/commissioning for the 1st two production systems at Isochronic's 1st pilot customer in Germany • Deployed and supported these interfaces across both pilot systems — managing testing, debugging, and field iteration Hardware & Program Management (2021–2022) • Authored and secured a ~CHF 1M Innosuisse innovation grant in partnership with HEIG-VD; managed the project through regular bi-weekly stakeholder meetings, alongside additional university research collaborations • Led electrical engineering and assembly for the company's 2nd and 3rd robot prototypes, one of which was showcased at Automatica, a leading international robotics trade fair • Designed and optimized in-house computer vision detection algorithms for multiple small-parts pick-and-place applications • Led electrical engineering for the company's pivot into large-part laser-cut sorting and palletization, starting with the 1st system for this new business line

R&D Intern | Master's Thesis Researcher
Lausanne Metropolitan Area
• Performed mechanical and electrical installation and commissioning of the company's first robotic prototype, including preliminary software design using TwinCAT • Master's thesis: developed a novel computer-vision-based calibration method for Isochronic's proprietary robot kinematics, simplifying and accelerating the calibration process

Firefighter
Renens
• SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) certified for interior firefighting operations • Serve as referent for the DMR radio project: completed specialized technical training on the new digital radio system, then designed and delivered operational training to ~70 volunteer firefighters, including officers and incident commanders, on DMR-mode usage in the field • Operate within a structured incident command environment

Research Assistant

Conducted experiments at the Experimental Fluids Dynamics Lab on irrigated and non-irrigated surgical catheters used in Heart Arrhythmia surgeries to establish safe working parameters and to study the use of acoustic sensing as means of early detection for possible lesion formation. Second author on the peer-reviewed article “Establishing Safe Working Parameters for Radiofrequency Ablation In Vitro Using Acoustic Sensing, Probability Mapping, and Catheter Contact Angle,” published in The Journal of Innovations in Cardiac Rhythm Management (July 2022, DOI: 10.19102/icrm.2022.130703). Acknowledged on a Poster accepted in an Oral Abstract Session at the Heart Rhythm Scientific Sessions of 2017 organized by the Heart Rhythm Society in Chicago, Illinois. Co-authored a Poster for a presentation session at the ESC Congress 2019 in Paris, France.

Semester Project
Worked with the REHAssist Group on a project titled "Web Dashboard of a 5DoF Serial Robot using ROS Bridge and JavaScript" Main tasks: • Translating the Computed Aided Design and Construction Information into URDF • Verifying the dynamic model • Linking it with rViz, Gazebo, and MoveIt • Creating a webpage of the dashboard to emulate rViz using ROS webtools such as ROSbridge and ROSJavaScript

Mechanical Engineering Trainee
Beirut District, Lebanon
Trainee program at MASCO (Mideast Aircraft Services Company) where I: - Attended lectures on aerodynamics, avionics, aircraft structure, and aircraft engines with a focus on the Airbus A320/321 electrical and mechanical systems and the IAE V2500 engine. - Accompanied engineers and technicians in their work from the hangars to different shops (metal shop, composite shop, NDT section, machine shop, CAMO section, avionics and instrumentation section, etc.) and attended daily and weekly checks, A-checks, and C-checks on A320, A321, and A330 aircraft
