Director and Owner of Graham & Graham Serviços Ltda., established in 2013 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Before becoming an independent consultant John worked for 30 years with ABB, now Hitachi Energy. With extensive experience in all stages of HVDC project planning and implementation, including bidding for power transmission concessions in an auction process, work includes many HVDC projects in a number of countries, both with ABB and as a consultant. The HVDC projects have included Nelson River (Canada), Itaipu (Brazil/Paraguay), Rihand-Dadri (India), Garabi (Argentina-Brazil) and more recently the two Belo Monte ±800 kV, 4000 MW, HVDC links for SGBH (State Grid China in Brazil). R&D projects have included a proposed UHVAC (1000 kV) scheme and a strategy to use HVDC with VSC converters on overhead lines, both with the objective to integrate renewable energy into the Brazilian system
