About
I am John Andrew Kane Jovellana, a chemical and nuclear engineer specializing in nuclear materials engineering. My current research investigates the oxidation behavior of Cr-based alloys for advanced technology fuel (ATF) cladding applications, exploring oxidation kinetics, oxide scale growth, microstructural evolution, and residual stress effects. Understanding material performance under extreme conditions is key to developing safer and more efficient nuclear energy systems. My research interests integrate chemical and nuclear engineering principles to develop efficient processes for next-generation nuclear reactors, such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGRs). By applying chemical engineering concepts to reactor design, process optimization, and thermal-hydraulic simulations, I aim to contribute to sustainable reactor design operations. This is particularly relevant to the Philippines, where nuclear energy plays an increasing role in the energy transition. I seek to combine materials science and process engineering to develop scalable, cost-effective, and safe solutions for the country’s energy future. In addition to corrosion science and nuclear systems engineering, I am expanding my research interests toward sustainable materials, particularly geopolymers for hazardous and radioactive waste management. By leveraging locally available materials in the Philippines and combining DFT simulations with thermodynamic modeling, I aim to optimize geopolymer formulations for improved durability and chemical stability in long-term storage, especially for radionuclide immobilization. Beyond research, I am extremely passionate about education and mentoring. I have developed materials for engineering students and plan to publish textbooks and create online platforms to address the need for localized academic resources. I believe that engineering education should empower students not just with technical knowledge, but with the ability to solve real-world challenges. Looking forward, my goal is to establish a research environment that merges rigorous science with practical impact. I aim to foster collaboration with researchers, industry partners, and policymakers to address critical issues in nuclear energy, process development, and waste management. Collaboration is essential for progress. I welcome connections with everyone who share a vision for advancing peaceful nuclear technologies, energy sustainability, and accessible quality education.
