Joana is a lawyer and a pharmacist working on Intellectual Property since 2010. She is one of the founding partners of the law firm NLP. Joana holds a Law degree from the University of Lisbon and an integrated master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Coimbra. After having conducted research in Pharmaceutics at The School of Pharmacy, University of London, Joana had her first professional experience in IP at Instituto Pedro Nunes in 2010, where she served as Innovation Manager. In 2011, she became an Intellectual Property Consultant at Clarke Modet & Co Portugal, drafting and prosecuting patents and preparing technology Intelligence reports. Between 2014 and 2016, Joana worked at the Portuguese Industrial Property Institute (INPI) as a Patent/SPC Examiner in the fields of Pharmacy, Chemistry and Biotechnology. In 2016 Joana became a Consultant at Vieira de Almeida & Associados, a law firm, where she worked until 2023. In 2024 she co-founded NLP, a law firm specialising in Intellectual Property. Since 2016, Joana has worked with some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies on complex patent matters, often taking responsibility for technical coordination both in infringement and revocation court proceedings. Joana also provides technical, legal, and strategic advice across a wide range of legal frameworks related to intellectual property, including due diligence reports, licensing, invention ownership and R&D activities. She is the VP of the Patents Commission of UNION-IP and a Member of the Standing Advisory Committee before the EPO (Working Party on Guidelines).

The Standing Advisory Committee before the European Patent Office (SACEPO) was formed in 1978 on the initiative of the first President of the European Patent Office (EPO), J.
