Jim Coates

With over two decades of experience at the intersection of the minerals and technology industries, I have dedicated my career to advancing innovative solutions in challenging environments. My academic journey includes an MSc and PhD-level research focused on electrical resistivity geophysical imaging systems for Arctic permafrost geotechnical engineering. My adventure began at the Yukon Geological Survey, where I was captivated by the Klondike Goldfields and the inventive techniques alluvial gold miners used to extract minerals in some of the most remote terrains. This fascination led me to establish Kryotek, a technology development company that continues to innovate sensor systems, drilling techniques, and software for climate and mineral exploration applications. In pursuit of further advancements in drilling technology, I launched DarkSide Drilling, specializing in lightweight drill rig development and contracting for high Arctic and alpine environments. Together, Kryotek and DarkSide have completed over 300 remote drilling and geophysical projects, as well as extensive self-financed mineral prospecting campaigns. Most recently, I founded DeltaVue, a software platform that bridges ground-based sensors with satellite networks, facilitating satellite texting and seamless communication through rugged computers. I live in Whitehorse, Yukon, with my wife and business partner, Astrid, and our dog, Banjo. I'm passionate about driving innovation and making an impact in the mineral and technology sectors.
