An experienced researcher in AI, robotics, machine learning, computer graphics, and computer vision. I am currently a Director and Tech Lead Manager at Google DeepMind, leading the Robot Mobility team and the Embodied Reasoning team. My research focuses on developing AI technologies (e.g. foundation models, reinforcement learning) and apply them to robots. Before joining Google, I was a core member of the computational photography group at Lytro, working on 3D scanning systems, depth map generation, point cloud processing and light field pipeline. I got my PhD at Gatech (http://www.jie-tan.net/). My PhD thesis focused on physically-based character animation. I developed algorithms in physics simulation, motion planning, neural network and reinforcement learning that can automatically control virtual characters in physically simulated environments. These algorithms were published as four SIGGRAPH papers, which have solved some of the long-standing problems in computer graphics.
