My pathway to early childhood education reflects the values that underpin my philosophy as an educator. I initially studied Psychology at university but quickly came to realise that the clinical tasks of categorizing humans according to diagnostic criteria held far less appeal for me than the aim of helping individuals to develop healthy psychological foundations to begin with. I therefore veered away from Psychology and towards early childhood, viewing it as an opportunity to work with human beings when they are first forming the neural pathways and networks that will largely define not only their long-term psychological health but also their templates for relationships and their cognitive conceptualizations of the world around them. The more time I spend in the industry, the more I realise that the joy of nurturing, guiding and supporting children is just the foundation of this vital role. Early childhood professionals are also blessed to develop strong relationships with families, with communities and with colleagues who share their passion and dedication. It is a unique and fulfilling experience that I am proud to be a part of. I embrace opportunities to spread this sense of pride, community and professionalism in every project that I undertake in the sector. It has been my pleasure to specialize in specific pedagogies that take a holistic and respectful approach to the education and care of young children. The Montessori method most strongly influences my classroom practice but I am also proud to incorporate other influences such as the Pikler approach to infant and toddler care. My certification in Positive Psychology and Wellbeing, and in the R2 Strengths profiling model, supports my work with my colleagues, families and the community. After many years of working with the youngest learners in our society, it has been my privilege to extend the same empowering and inspiring opportunities to our most experienced citizens through intergenerational learning. After many years of design and development, we opened Echoes Montessori in January 2022 as part of a groundbreaking intergenerational village alongside ECH's Encore apartments for independent retirement living. This setting, where we share our land and share our lives, has given me direct insights into what emerging research makes clear: we are truly 'better together', and intergenerational learning benefits all involved. This work brings together my passion for education and for promoting holistic well-being, and allows me to encourage learning and flourishing at every age and stage of life.
