Under a program put on by the Disabilities Services Office of Northern Michigan University, I kept notes for a fellow student in a 400-level business research class. For each class session that the student attended, I e-mailed a word document with full notes and diagrams that I had recorded. In addition, I made myself available in case the student needed any additional support.

Northern Michigan University's primary campus cafeteria, The Marketplace, caters to hundreds of students on a daily basis and is also open to the general public. Working here as a kitchen attendant, I was able to experience, first-hand, the tremendous effort that is put into keeping such an establishment running smoothly. Here is a summary of the skills I learned or improved upon: - Versatility: Each day of the week, I was assigned a different task. Some tasks were independent, and others required teamwork. - Customer Service: Originally a shy, introverted individual, tasks involving customer interaction helped me to break out of my shell and become more self-confident. I worked as a cashier and as a server for the Grill Station, where I helped prepare grilled chicken, burgers, and french fries. - Attendance and Punctuality: I never missed a day of work, and I did my best to arrive to each shift 5 minutes early.

As the "Public Area Cleaner," or student custodian, for the apartment building that I lived in, I worked independently to ensure the entryways were clear, the stairwells were clean, and the mail area and laundry room were clear of debris. In addition to my assigned tasks, I also did the following: - I worked with my supervisor to set up a number system for the laundry machines, so tenants could easily see if a machine was in use, and know who to find if a tenant left his/her laundry in a machine for too long. - To reduce waste and keep the laundry room more organized, I made signs explaining what was okay to put in the trash and recycle bins. - For a few weeks in the summer, I filled-in for another PAC, cleaning two other buildings in addition to my original assignment.

As a teller, I work in the "front line" of the bank, where I work directly with customers by completing transactions and assisting them with any questions they may have. - Customer Service: I do my best to greet each customer with a smile with the hopes that I can get them to smile back at me. There are many customers that come in once or more a week, and I have been able to learn their names. Using a person's name makes the transaction more personal and less rehearsed. - Money Handling: I have learned skills in receiving and processing banking transactions such as checking and savings account withdrawals and deposits, loan payments, and issuing cashier’s checks. I have a proven record of accurately maintaining, verifying, and balancing my cash drawer.
