James Ong ✈️
Automation Engineer (Integration & Hardware Validation) @ Samsara
About
Hi I'm James, and I’m currently acting as an Automation Engineer (Integration & Hardware Validation) at Samsara with a focus on developing a platform for cloud based hardware in the loop and device monitoring (on the Automation Team). In my role I construct and assemble RIGS for conducting testing at scale while also developing a mechanism for checking out devices and running tests on the devices at scale while monitoring hardware reliability through databricks and S3. Prior to Samsara, I previously did college at Imperial College London and Cornell University and majored in Computer Engineering. During my spare time I'm interested in running, tennis, and travel. Feel free to connect and reach out if you know me or had any questions in general.

Experience

Automation Engineer (Integration & Hardware Validation)
San Francisco, California, United States
• Developed a cloud platform utilizing Buildkite, Docker, GraphQL, and Python for testing over 1000 devices, including gateway hardware. • Designed SCPI/Telnet control interfaces for power supplies and cellular base-station simulators, ensuring accurate system validation. • Created libraries for GPS/GNSS and RF testing to benchmark device performance in a radiated test environment.

Automation Intern (Integration & Hardware Validation)
San Francisco Bay Area
-Developed a cloud accessible (buildkite+docker+python) hardware in the loop test rig to test power consumption, CAN, J1708 signals on 4+ vehicle gateways. - Used Altium to design a custom PCB for hardware reusability and approach scalability - Utilized fusion360 and CAD modeling to assemble a testbed for conducting wake on motion tests - Contributed to developing a databricks and data lake based model for monitoring hardware and device failure scenarios

Teaching Assistant Software Systems
London, England, United Kingdom
• Selected as one of five students to assist a professor in teaching databases and network systems to 140+ students • Explained and clarified concepts including entity relation models, relational algebra, and TCP-IP to students • Debugged socket programming code in python to facilitate client-server communication protocols • Hosted weekly discussions with teaching assistants and professor to effectively coordinate teaching sessions

Software and Data Engineer Intern
Singapore
• Worked with the systems division in an electric motorbike start-up to determine the price of electrical systems • Extracted and processed data from 70+ price break tables to optimize and recalculate the cost of electrical systems • Wrote knapsack and greedy algorithms to find the minimum price of a given component based on price break table data • Used python to determine unit, aggregate and total cost of components in the supply chain • Ensured code was reliable and deployable through extensive unit testing and setting up a package dependency manager • Achieved an overall 30% drop in price of electrical systems through supply chain calculations

Associate Director of Global Operations
Singapore
• Provided a virtual global business case competition experience for 2500+ high school students as sponsored by Tiger Global and PWC (PriceWaterhouse Coopers) • Lead the operations division to assign team and ID numbers for all applicants, developing spreadsheet proficiency. • Built and launched a website compatible with mobile and laptop interfaces. • Organized weekly group meetings to coordinate speaker workshops, event proposals and task allocations. • Performed comprehensive data analytics on applicant data to assist targeted marketing.
