Morrison Knudsen Corporation was a 90 year old diversified company known for its heavy construction, telecommunications infrastructure and industrial development projects that included Hoover Dam and numerous major projects domestically and internationally. After being recruited by the Chairman to return in an operational / project finance capacity: Participated with teams executing strategic acquisitions, joint ventures, and corporate organizational changes; Led the market and financial teams for the successful bid for the franchise to develop 200-mph high-speed rail routes in Texas; and Prepared expert witnesses and testified under oath for two days on marketing and financial issues in contested case administrative hearings before the State of Texas leading up to the franchise award.

* Science Applications International Corporation is a leading provider of information technology, systems integration and eSolutions to commercial and government customers. During the summer of 1981 and working in the Energy Technology and Engineering Group: * Researched, and was later invited as a co-author of, a published study on developments in industrial robotics and their use in Japan from 1960-1980; * Organized an industry conference on the same subject; and * Consulted during my senior year.

* The National Air and Space Museum is one of the iconic museums in the world, reputed for its innovative and engaging galleries educating visitors from around the globe on one of the most exciting phases of recent US history and exploration. * Redesigned curricular content and visitor flows for the satellite communications gallery; * Worked on curatorial and topics planning for an exhibit on solar energy technologies and their applications; and * Consulted during my junior year.

Researched and produced the forecast portion of the briefing book on potential future satellite communications requirements through 2000, including consideration of terrestrial alternatives. This internal report was used to support the inter-government negotiations on geosynchronous orbit bandwidth allocations at the 1979 World Administrative Radio Conference that immediately followed my assignment

As the first CFO of this MBO spin-off from Morrison Knudsen, responsibilities included establishing new treasury, legal, benefits and risk management functions on top of previous responsibilities managing financial reporting, estimating, information systems and control. Within the first two years: Secured the $210 mm in debt and equity financing needed to spin off the new private company; Worked with operations to reduce losses on existing contracts by $20 mm and with sales and engineering to secure new work consistently producing 15%+ gross margins; Handled bank and investor relations with regular meetings and conference calls; and Completed the sale to a strategic acquirer and coordinated the financial and administrative integration for what continues today as the primary US operation of France-based GEC Alsthom.

Recruited to Morrison Knudsen's primary process engineering business and, with a former executive of Science Applications Inc., founded its Automated Systems Division to focus on the application and use of leading edge distributed computer, database, and communications systems for industrial and general business customers. In a two year assignment before leaving to enter business school: Researched and designed, gained approval for and executed the first two phases of a program to upgrade the voice, video, and data communications capabilities of the rapidly expanding $5 billion, 26-site Howard Hughes Medical Institute; and Developed the first $20 mm in backlog for the division and grew initial staff to ten.

Invited by faculty overseeing the University's Interactive Computer Graphics Lab, provided technical and programming assistance to graduate and undergraduate users and oversaw the care of $300,000 in computer graphics and processing equipment. Undergraduate thesis demonstrated coding for and use of 3-D graphics and nesting logic to optimize the configuration of flat mirrored components for solar energy collectors and other capabilities to feed dimensional and key properties information to mechanical, thermal, and fluid dynamic design analysis programs.

* Sony Corporation is one of the most recognizable names in consumer electronics, reputed for its innovations and leadership. As one of the first five students selected for a newly formed exchange program sponsored by Sony's Chairman: * Hosted by Sony senior executives responsible for major R&D, manufacturing and headquarters operations with special focus on lessons learned from new product and process introductions; * Supported the team negotiating with Philips to establish the CD-I multi-media international technical standards – predecessor to current DVD standards; * Developed US marketing plans for Sony's engineering workstation product line; and * Learned workable Japanese living in the Shinagawa district in Tokyo.
