Hybrid simulation is a technique where a structure’s behavior is simulated by experimentally testing one section and numerically modeling the remainder. Actions are fed between the two in an iterative process to solve the equation of motion. Hybrid testing has previously been applied in earthquake engineering, car shock absorbers, electrical circuits and more. In this PhD thesis, the technique is used to study different sections of the wind turbine blade to a higher detail than traditional material-, sub-structural- or full structure testing. The challenges in the project includes; control and monitoring at different time scales, finite element simulation and programming of hybrid control programs.

Perform hybrid simulation on a wind turbine blade. Hybrid simulation is a sub-structural testing method where a structure's response is emulated by combining a finite element model of the main part of the structure with and experiment of a given substructure of interest. The method was applied to evaluate the efficiency of retrofitted elements in wind turbines as an alternative to full scale testing.
