John Rauch

A key focus of my research over the past 8 years has been the design and implementation of physical devices which facilitate the examination, experimentation, and execution of theories and concepts that span a variety of topics. Through my work, I create the platforms on which other researchers can develop their concept and, through iteration, concluding products. This process requires working closely with researchers and having a good understanding of the concept which they are developing. In development of a project, I utilize various tools and systems. I design and analyze models using Solidworks CAD (Computer Aided Design) software. I construct prototypes with CNC (Computer Numerical Control), SLA (Stereolithography), and FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) rapid prototyping machinery and associated software, as well as with traditional machining methods. For electronic concepts, I write code for Arduino based platforms. When a device is ready for production, I perform injection molding analysis on plastic parts in Solidworks as well. For illustrative purposes, I will also create realistic digital renderings of models using a physics-based rendering engine. Along the way, I have had a hand in researching concepts spanning many fields including radiation detection, marine propulsion, emergency medical devices, environmental sampling, chemical analysis, and industrial robotics. The ability to design and rapidly prototype physical test platforms has been invaluable my ability to work with and advance these fields. Furthermore, analysis and iteration has allowed me to turn many concepts into end-user products.
