As an educational consultant, I support schools and institutions in strengthening their language education programs, offering strategic guidance to teachers, school leaders, and curriculum teams. My work focuses on creating inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments that reflect today’s diverse and interconnected world. I also design and deliver workshops for children, teens, and young adults on topics such as language diversity, linguistic discrimination, and speech perception. As a freelance researcher, writer, speaker, and educator, I use storytelling, evidence-based insight, and public dialogue to foster more inclusive societies and advocate for equity, dignity, and human rights—particularly in the context of Japan. Through my work, I lend my voice to those who can't or won’t speak up, and stand with those whose rights are too often overlooked. I write and speak to challenge exclusion, disrupt silence, and promote culturally rich, thriving communities. A key focus of my work is pushing back against the growing anti-immigration narrative—a narrative that spreads like a cancer, eroding our collective sense of humanity and weakening the bonds that hold diverse societies together. I believe education, empathy, and courageous storytelling are essential tools to stop this rot and rebuild communities grounded in respect and shared belonging. My work spans articles, essays, and public talks on migration, language, and cultural identity. I am the author of The Japan Guide from Renting to Rice Cooking (2025), a finalist for the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award. Whether in print, on stage, or in the classroom, I strive to make space for critical dialogue and advocate for a world where every individual—regardless of origin—has the right to be seen, heard, and valued.

As a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo, I held a joint appointment in the Department of Language and Information Sciences and the English Department, where I led research and teaching in linguistics, phonetics, language acquisition, speech perception, language education, curriculum design, and intercultural communication. I developed and taught a range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including innovative online classes and a course titled “Why and How People Migrate: A Current, Historical, and Global Perspective.” I also taught a graduate seminar, “From Experimental Design to Publication,” guiding students through year-long research projects that culminated in presentations at prestigious international conferences such as the International Congress of Phonetic Sciences (ICPhS)—with all of my students successfully accepted for presentation. I supervised student research and mentored teaching and research assistants, contributing to curriculum development and departmental strategy with an emphasis on inclusivity, interdisciplinarity, and global relevance. My research focuses on experimental phonetics and language acquisition, employing rigorous methods to explore speech perception and acquisition. I served as Principal Investigator on a funded research project (¥3.5 million) and collaborated on international initiatives, presenting at conferences across Asia, Europe, and North America. Beyond research and teaching, I actively participated in university governance, serving on hiring committees, contributing to the student admissions process, and managing other administrative responsibilities essential to departmental operations. This role enhanced my leadership in academic research and program development, reinforcing my commitment to fostering educational environments that promote diversity, critical thinking, and global citizenship.

Managed the on-site production team, ensuring smooth coordination of crew members and support staff throughout the filming process. Facilitated communication between the director and crew to maintain an efficient and organized workflow. Supported the lead actress and addressed on-the-ground production needs to keep the shoot running smoothly and on schedule.

Prepared comprehensive funding applications, including detailed budgeting and financial planning for each film project. Served as First Assistant Director on a film project, coordinating cast and crew activities both on and off set to ensure smooth daily operations. Managed day-to-day logistical tasks and responded promptly to requests from the film director, supporting creative and operational workflow.
