The TBM funding programme aims to support late stage research projects that lead to the implementation of new therapies, diagnostic techniques or preventive methods, that would otherwise not reach the patient due to a lack of industrial interest. - Expert for SBO projects: Expert panel on Biomedical & Health Sciences The Strategic Basic Research (SBO) programme focuses on innovative research which, if scientifically successful, will create prospects for economic or societal applications (e.g. a new generation of products, processes and/or services).
Education

[Biomaterials/Bionanotechnology/Biophysics] (joint w Chalmers University of Technology)
PhD Thesis titled: "Influence of surface charge on the adsorption of proteins on titanium" (VUBPRESS Brussels University Press, ISBN 978 90 5487 561 1) PhD Research on Biomaterials & Medical Implants with a focus on Titanium medical implants, funded through my PhD Fellowship from Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) The aim of my PhD research was to understand how human proteins interact with biomaterial surfaces (like titanium) in order to enable on the one hand reduction of the thrombogenic character of biomaterial surfaces in case of e.g. cardiovascular implants, and to stimulate on the other hand protein adsorption on biomaterial surfaces to improve the tissue-implant interface in case of bone implants. Joint PhD with Biological Physics Group at Chalmers University of Technology to develop an in-situ cell that combines electrochemical and QCM-D measurements to monitor protein adsorption. --> Solvay Award 2009 awarded for my PhD thesis: https://youtu.be/7_v5ds8bGRg?feature=shared

Visiting PhD Researcher in Biological Physics & Bionanotechnology
During my PhD studies, several extended research visits were undertaken in the Biological & Chemical Physics Groups at Chalmers University of Technology under the supervision of Professor Bengt Kasemo and Professor Sofia Svedhem. During those visits, I collaborated with researchers at Chalmers and QSense AB, the spin-off company creating the microbalances, on the development of a now commercially available setup and in-situ cell that combines electrochemical and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation measurements with the aim to monitor the influence of surface charge on the adsorption of proteins on titanium surfaces. The collaboration with the Biological Physics Group and QSense AB was very successful and led to the global commercialisation of this electrochemical cell.

(Burgerlijk Ingenieur Werktuigkunde-Elektrotechniek, optie Werktuigkunde)
MSc Thesis Focused on Medical Implants, Biomechanics and Biomaterials Science: "Study of the corrosion fatigue of biomaterials (medical implants) made out of Ti6Al4V ELI" I was working in close collaboration with an orthopaedic surgeon at the University Hospital to understand the biomechanics and material fatigue aspects behind medical implant failure. For research purposes, I had access to anonymised patient data regarding medical implant failure. Laureate for Best Master Thesis in Biomedical Engineering in Flanders, awarded by the ‘Genootschap Biomedische Techniek en Gezondheidszorg van het KVIV’/'Biomedical technology and Health Care Society of the Royal Flemish Engineering Society' (2004)
