As a Civil Structural Engineer, I was responsible for the overall structural repair and infrastructural upgrade of a 300 capacity Winners Chapel Church located at Abule Ado, Lagos State. This was a very important intervention aimed at restoring the structural integrity, a esthetic value. The project involved a complete revamp of the exterior and interior of the building. One of the technical elements that featured prominently in this project was the designing and construction of the perimeter fencing. I came up with a foundation system design that incorporated reinforced strip foundations complete with isolated column foundations at 3-meter spacing to meet the structural requirement for sideways stability against soil pressure. In addition, there was the need for site surveying to determine the boundaries that would be observed in the final fence construction. Aside from the technical aspects of the engineering work, the other role I undertook was that of the major project manager in charge of overseeing more than 15 of the highly skilled workers in this area. The quality control measures put in place ensured a cleaner record of zero incidents from the commencement of the execution of the project. I also controlled the budget of the project. As a way of dealing with the transportation of materials in the Abule Ado Corridor, the concept of just-in-time delivery of the materials was put in place. By ensuring optimal utilization of the materials in the construction of the building, the project came up not only before the scheduled time but also completed under budget. The final result was a modern, fortified, and aesthetically revitalized facility that met the highest standards of civil engineering and provided a safe, welcoming environment for the Winners Chapel community. This project remains a testament to my ability to balance complex structural requirements with practical project management and high-quality finishing in a challenging urban environment.
