Ibrahim Bashir
Software Engineer @ Aival
About
Pursuing an MEng in Computing at Imperial College London, I recently contributed to Aival, a London-based AI-focused healthcare start-up, as a Software Engineer. During this role, I developed a PDF export pipeline in TypeScript, transforming complex AI evaluation metrics into accessible reports for stakeholders across clinical, technical, and management domains. My work demonstrated expertise in TypeScript, API design, and back-end web development. At Aival, I collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to streamline the evaluation of AI tools in healthcare, ensuring their safety and effectiveness. My motivation lies in applying technical solutions to real-world healthcare challenges, and I aim to bring a thoughtful, user-focused perspective to every project. I am committed to driving innovation that bridges technical rigor with broad accessibility.

During my 3rd year at Imperial College London, I spent April–September 2023 as a Software Engineer at Aival, a London-based start-up focused on independent AI quality assurance for healthcare, helping hospitals evaluate and monitor AI products on their own data so they can adopt safe, effective tools with confidence. I worked on two core pieces of the platform: 1️⃣ PDF evaluation reports I built a PDF export pipeline in TypeScript for Aival’s AI validation product. The feature turned complex AI evaluation results (performance, fairness, robustness and explainability metrics) into a clear, shareable report that clinical, technical and management stakeholders could all understand. This meant: - Designing the report structure and layout - Integrating it with the existing evaluation workflows - Ensuring reports were reliable, readable and ready to be used in real decision-making around AI procurement. 2️⃣ DICOM labelling tool I also developed a labelling tool using TypeScript and Node.js that allowed clients to label DICOM medical images more easily. These labelled datasets were then used to validate AI vendors’ models on real-world hospital data, contributing directly to safer, more trustworthy AI in radiology. Across both projects, I: - Worked end-to-end across the stack (from backend logic to user-facing behaviour) - Collaborated with a small, multidisciplinary team combining engineers, clinicians and AI researchers - Gained hands-on experience in AI evaluation, medical imaging workflows and product-focused engineering in a safety-critical domain. Grateful to the Aival team for the opportunity and mentorship — and excited to keep building tools that make AI safer and more useful in the real world*. 🙌 (If anyone’s interested in healthcare AI validation or trustworthy AI in practice, I’m always happy to chat!)
