About
I am interested in the foundational structures of quantum theory and how they can be used in novel ways for advantages in quantum information processing. Currently, my main interests are in developing a paradigm of higher-order quantum computation, the quantum analogue of functional programming, as well as in understanding causality in quantum theory. These new tools have applications in fields ranging from quantum algorithms, simulation of physical systems and quantum machine learning to blind quantum computation and quantum communication. Alongside academic research, I have also worked as a research consultant for Ofcom, the UK Office for Communications, leading a research team commissioned to write a report on quantum communications and its future impact on the communications sector: now available at https://www.ofcom.org.uk/research-and-data/technology/general/quantum-communications?SQ_VARIATION_222594=0

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Working as an independent postdoctoral research fellow in quantum information and quantum foundations (75%), with a joint appointment at the Institute for Quantum Computing, University of Waterloo (25%).

Doctoral Researcher

Doctoral Researcher in the Quantum Group, Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford. Part of the HKU-Oxford Joint Laboratory for Quantum Information and Computation, led by Prof Giulio Chiribella (Hong Kong) and Prof Jonathan Barrett (Oxford). Worked on quantum information theory, foundations and communication. Specifically, developed new research directions on coherent control of quantum channels, indefinite causal order and routed quantum circuits.

Consultant for Quantum Communications

Founded and led a 3-person team to write a 100-page report on the possibilities and limitations of quantum communications and its potential impact on the communication sector. Gave presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences at Ofcom on the findings of the report. Part-time work completed alongside my PhD.

Worked on the theoretical foundations of a quantum generalisation of feedforward neural networks. Supervised by Dr Oscar Dahlsten (Oxford) and Prof Myungshik Kim (Imperial). The paper published as a result of this research internship has now received over 200 citations.

Spent the 3rd year of my MSci physics degree on an Erasmus exchange in Freiburg, Germany. MSci thesis in theoretical quantum physics completed under the supervision of Prof Dr Andreas Buchleitner. Thesis title: Efficient quantum transport in disordered networks with vibrations. Additionally, attended a 1-month intensive summer course in German language, at B2 level, followed by a semester-long weekly course, reaching C1 level by the end of the year.
