Hisla Bates, MD
Medical Director BH Children’s Services @ MVP Health Care
About
chiatry) I am a Board Certified Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist with 20+ years of clinical, academic, and administrative experience across inpatient, outpatient, residential, partial hospital, and managed care settings. I currently serve as Medical Director of Behavioral Health Children’s Services at MVP Health Care. My training includes an internship in Primary Care/Internal Medicine at Yale, General Adult Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine (NYC), and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry fellowship training through the Harvard Medical School program at Massachusetts General Hospital. I have held teaching roles with trainees at Boston Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, and the University of Arizona, and served as a psychiatric consultant to pediatricians through the MCPAP program. In managed care leadership, I have overseen clinical quality, policy development, utilization/case management functions, and population-based program design, including consulting on complex policy areas and cross-agency collaboration. I focus on clinician and trainee well-being (burnout/moral injury prevention and coaching), positive psychology, mindfulness-based stress reduction, arts-in-psychiatry training, and cardiac psychiatry—supporting emotional recovery and mental health after myocardial infarction and other cardiac events. I also address race and cultural factors that shape care. I am the founder of Doctors Art School, a community and learning space for healthcare professionals using the arts to strengthen well-being, connection, and human-centered practice. I hold a BFA from Parsons School of Design and work as an artist-illustrator and printmaker; my podcast explores the intersection of art and medicine. I co-chair AACAP’s Arts & Innovation Committee and serve as Assistant Arts Editor for JAACAP. Available for keynotes and workshops for corporate teams, healthcare organizations, and medical schools on: arts-based approaches to wellbeing and communication; burnout/moral injury and sustainable practice; leadership and team culture; positive psychiatry and flourishing; cardiac psychiatry and recovery after cardiac events; and women’s cardiovascular health, including SCAD.
