As part of the Application and Assessment Committee, we review applications for the Volunteering Impact Fund and new Volunteering groups. The committee meets every fortnight where we are expected to advise any possible amendments or opinions and then present a summary at the general Council meetings for voting.

During a week long internship at the Union, I spent time in the digital department where I was responsible for putting together presentation slides intended to show the progress of a marketing campaign for one of agency’s biggest clients, Miller Homes. I was successful in showing the campaign’s progression in a simplified and clearly laid out manner, and my work was later presented to the digital team. I also spent some time in the Creative department where I got an insight into how a creative advertising campaign comes together.

TEDx is a one day event which attracts hundreds of students and non-students. It is affiliated with the main TED organisation, devoted to spreading ideas in the form of short powerful talks. I was responsible for issuing tickets, managing crowds and explaining the aims of the organisations that set up workshops.

As part of the volunteer team I played a very public facing role, from responding to enquiries at the festival Kiosk, invigilating public commissions and stewarding events to leading festival tours. This experience definitely helped to improve my confidence in dealing with the public which was so essential to this role.

Over the festival and running up to it I was in regular contact with artists to ensure that my creative input reinforced or added to their ideas, the press office to discuss marketing, and with festival coordinators during team meetings to discuss our progress.
