Henry C Woodruff
Associate Professor @ Maastricht University
About
I lead The D-Lab (Data-Driven Lab) at the department of Precision Medicine, Maastricht University, where we translate advanced AI in medical imaging into tools that can be implemented responsibly in clinical and research practice. My day-to-day work sits at the interface of science, software engineering, governance, and people: building teams that deliver, and turning ambitious ideas into funded programmes with clear outputs and accountability. As D-Lab lead and AI portfolio holder within GROW (Research Institute for Oncology and Reproduction), I manage a diverse pipeline—from early prototypes to CE-marked solutions—and focus on what often determines success: stakeholder alignment, realistic implementation pathways, data governance, and quality management. I work closely with clinicians, developers, researchers, IT, and external partners to move from “proof-of-concept” to “fit-for-purpose”, with attention to validation, safety, and adoption barriers. A substantial part of my role is leading and coordinating large grant applications and consortia. I develop funding strategies across Dutch and EU programmes, craft coherent workplans and deliverable structures, and manage risk, timelines, budgets, and reporting requirements. I enjoy the pragmatic side of programme leadership: translating strategic aims into work packages, ensuring resources match deliverables, and creating the conditions for collaborators to execute effectively. My approach is structured and transparent—clear responsibilities, measurable milestones, and early mitigation of technical, regulatory, and organisational risks. I also help shape institutional practice around responsible AI, including guidance for research and education, with an emphasis on reproducibility, governance, and real-world impact. If you are interested in building clinically meaningful AI solutions, scaling multidisciplinary teams, or developing EU/NL grant programmes that can actually be delivered, I’m always open to connect.
