Hazelle Smith

Sales Assistant @ General Pants Co.

About

My name is Hazelle, and I'm a Fashion Designer with a Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design from RMIT, graduating in 2022. After graduating, I spent two years at SOJO (Tradie Underwear) as a Junior Fashion Designer and Product Developer, where I contributed to the full designing and production process of a garment and gained valuable experience in design execution and production processes. Currently, I work at General Pants as a Sales Assistant. I made the intentional decision to step away from the studio to gain first hand retail experience to broaden my understanding of customer behaviour, needs, wants and interactions, in store presentation and the way clothing is experienced in a physical space. This shift has allowed me to see the fashion lifecycle from a new perspective and has broadened my insight into how products are displayed, styled, and received on the shop floor. Having developed a well rounded view of both design and retail, I now feel confident and ready to return to the fashion design industry. I'm a creative, flamboyant individual with a passion for bringing beautiful, feminine, and expressive designs to life, designs that inspire confidence and joy in the people who wear them.

I currently work at General Pants as a Sales Assistant. On a personal level, this role has helped me grow in confidence, improve my communication skills, and learn how to create a positive and enjoyable experience for customers. I have loved getting out of my comfort zone and changing environments and going into store to learn all that I have. Professionally, it has deepened my understanding of retail, how products are sold, how waste is managed, and how visual merchandising can influence buying behaviour. Through daily experience, I’ve gained valuable insight into product display strategies and have identified more effective ways to showcase items to improve sales and visibility. I’ve developed a strong knowledge of denim, learning how it can be improved and what styles work best for different body types. I’ve also expanded my understanding of various brands and cuts, allowing me to better match products to customers needs. Working on the shop floor has given me a sharper eye for design execution, fit, and function. I now have a clearer sense of who our consumers are, what they’re looking for, and how to engage with them in a way that drives sales while building genuine connection. Importantly, I’ve also developed the ability to spot gaps in the current market, recognising opportunities for new pieces or product categories that could strengthen a brand's offering and better meet customer demand.
