Hannah Mekaru
Biomedical Engineering Teaching Assistant @ Duke University Pratt School of Engineering
About
I am a motivated biomedical engineering student at Duke University who is interested in the intersectionality between medical devices and the nervous system. I have a passion for medical device design and empowering people via innovative products and treatments. As a recipient of a neurostimulator implant, I am honored to work in a research lab that measures the impact of vagus nerve stimulation on various psychological attributes within geriatric patients. In addition to implementing device design, I love sharing the thrill of math and engineering through my internship at Engineering Tomorrow and my position as a calculus teaching assistant at Duke.

• Designed Python & MATLAB tools to automate device disposition by aggregating test fixture data, reducing analysis time from 1 hour to 5 minutes and improving decision accuracy for 100+ neurostimulators weekly • Led redesign of test fixture parts in SolidWorks and Altium using DFM principles, cutting machining costs by over 30% and reducing operator setup time • Conducted experimental validation of updated test fixtures by analyzing 40,000+ functional test reports, identifying nominal signal shifts and recommended test spec updates to reduce false failures

Project Intern and Student Mentor
Iterated student engineering labs to develop and streamline projects that teach and incorporate CAD, coding, and the engineering design process. Worked specifically on projects related to sustainable design, medical devices, and aerodynamics. Connected with high school students to advise on engineering majors and college pathways.

Project Engineering Intern
Durham, North Carolina, United States
Continued development of an ergonomic device under the professional advising of Duke Health employees, specifically those within perinatal clinics and the ergonomics division.
