Trained as a sociologist, I am a health services researcher who largely focuses on the delivery of treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs) in the United States. I conduct research on specialty treatment organizations as well as the treatment workforce, primarily using quantitative survey methods. In addition to my research, I teach graduate students about research methods in clinical and translational science. I also serve as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment and routinely review grant applications for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

I lead and collaborate on extramurally funded research projects related to substance abuse while contributing to the educational mission of the Department of Behavioral Science. Currently, I am the principal investigator of a five-year project funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse to study the impact of health reform on the delivery of buprenorphine treatment in the US. In addition, I am currently a co-investigator on five other federally funded projects. I routinely review grant applications for the National Institutes of Health. For our department's educational program, I am the course director for a graduate-level course in research methods related to clinical and translational science as well as the Associate Director of our T32 training program in drug abuse and behavior.
