I working as an English language assistant in a French elementary school. My time was spent with entire classes and smaller groups of students, depending on the age group and the day. The students, who ranged from 4 to 11 years old, were encouraged to explore the reaches of the English language through role play, drawing, singing, dancing, school games and many other techniques. At the end of the year, I was even able to assist with the production of an entire play in English, based on the book The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl.

Over the course of this year-long period, I worked in two capacities for Professor Carla Shapreau : I was first a general research assistant, among ten or so others on her team, that endeavored to translate primary source documents from French (for me, but others worked with various languages) to English so that Professor Shapreau could carry out her research based on these sources. This work was not, however, exclusively focused on translation; I learned how to effectively and concisely place said documents in their historical context by researching the authors, items and locations listed. This process expedited Professor Shapreau's work and lead to many fruitful finds. By the summer, I had been nominated and selected as one of an elite few who received a fellowship with the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program. From that point onward, my collaboration with Professor Shapreau was much more intimate and garnered excellent results that were later published.
