Part of a dynamic next generation sequencing team producing high throughput data from various genomic DNA and total RNA samples on Illumina HiSeq and Life Technologies Ion Proton platforms. Responsible for developing custom NGS assays, and validation of new protocols/instruments, and production level sample processing.

Assisted in developing and instructed lecture and laboratory courses to teach DNA criminalists mitochondrial biology and analysis methods through lecture, discussion, demonstrations, exercises, examination and practical laboratory experience. Mitochondrial DNA Analysis for Forensic Applications using Sanger Sequencing, Linear Arrays and Next Generation Sequencing. (Course R602 Mitochondrial DNA Analysis.) * Worked in the animal facility handling C57BL/6 mice * feeding, weighing, scruffing, ear clipping, injecting, and sacrifice * performed genomic DNA extraction from ear tissue samples, and genotyped mice via PCR.

Studied the effect of iron deficiency on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the reversibility of the effect in rat model (F344) by measuring mtDNA copy number changes using duplex qPCR assay targeting mtDNA and nuclear DNA of rats. Results presented at the Student Summer Symposium at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute. Assisted with development and optimization of an assay using 454 Next Generation Sequencing technology targeting HVI/HVII (hypervariable) regions on mitochondrial genome (applications include clinical and forensic uses) through being actively involved with experimental design and performing data analysis, lab management (administer orders and expenses), assistance writing grant applications and reports, and training students and staff lab technologies.
